Mt. Hood is Oregon’s highest peak. At 11,239 feet the mountain rises one vertical mile above Timberline Lodge and has the distinction of having 11 glaciers perched on its flanks. The views you’ll observe over the course of this journey will be engraved into your mind forever. Climbing Mt. Hood is not uncommon; in fact, it is the second most climbed mountain in the world behind Japan’s Mt. Fuji. The achievement of summiting Hood is still high on the list.
It is important to be in top physical condition to climb the mountain as well as having the necessary equipment, maps and experience. There are many climbing routes that vary from introductory to advanced. All routes require proficient use of an ice axe, crampons and rope. You should plan ahead for this trip since there are no good stores in Government Camp to obtain climbing equipment. Contact Mt. Hood Adventure for details on how to plan your trip. Standing on top of Mt. Hood you feel as though you are on top of the world, a feeling deserving of one of our “Top 5 Adventures.”
